Warmer temperatures have led to the bleaching of the Pacific Island ’s main source of survival — the coral reefs. The algae that help feed coral is loosened and, because the algae give them colour, the starved corals look pale. Warmer summer temperatures allowed trees to grow at higher altitudes than today. The expansion of forests into higher elevations greatly reduced the area covered by upland tundra communities for thousands of years. Warmer temperatures also lead to a shorter life span of the mosquito, and shorter life means less time to transmit the virus to another person. Some scientists hold that the short life span will favor less transmission even though the amplification of dengue virus will proceed faster at high temperatures.
Warmer seawater is already saturated with carbon, so it absorbs less. Robust absorption of carbon requires a continuous cycling of colder, carbon-poor water upward from the ocean depths. Warmer temperatures are likely to decrease the number of people who die each year from cold weather. However, in the United States, only 1000 people die from the cold each year, while twice that many die from the heat (US EPA).
